We swam in the current by the waterfall
Just deep enough – a hot day
We’d stopped and parked the old green Volvo
And saw box turtles on the sandy banks
Of the river. Cold water spun and eddied
Around us when we jumped, enveloping
Our bodies in sweetness
Only found in Wisconsin summer
No swimsuits – just our underwear
Our jeans hanging on a tree
I felt like we could stay forever
But a Wisconsin summer only lasts so long
Then the colors change and
The ice-age approaches
