Signal Poetry

Kings Highway

Your passenger deflates in the shotgun seat

As you follow the bright white dots through a curve

Of a blacktop road at night

The cigarette lighter by the driver’s door…

Push it in

See the white bunny hop out of sight

What’s it up to?

No one will remember, don’t even try

Ahead, a bridge facing tomorrow

With red glowing rivets fastening  trestles of iron

Surrounded by a dense black sky

Someone is climbing to the top to hoist a flag

He carries its meaning with him

What a line of cars driving down Kings Highway

Three lanes of rednecks past the black and white theater

I know, I know,   I told my friend – It’s only a movie
